Web Application Gateway provides core functionality, such as user definition, administration and authentication for Web applications.

Often it is undesirable to display a "Please Attempt To Crack Into Our Web Site Here" logon screen to a public internet site when the number of individuals with any business accessing the back end applications are extremely limited. Providing a separate URL to these individuals minimizes the attractive nuisance of a publicly visible logon screen.

The Web Application Gateway (WAG) serves a straightforward purpose - provide a secure logon to a variety of applications via a web interface. The purpose of WAG is to provide solid functionality with an easy to navigate, unobtrusive interface. It is designed to be as simple as possible as well as easy to setup and administer. The creativity is left to the individual application designers.

Removing user logon screens from an overtly public web page does not, of course, make access to back end applications secure. If "security by obscurity" is your principal line of defense, then your site has much bigger problems. Deploying WAG with an SSL certificate along with appropriate server and database security measures are all important.

A note about the example applications included with the distribution. These are not production ready applicatons, nor are they intended to be. They are examples from which you can build and extend. Enhancements and bug fixes for WAG will take priority to any modifications to the example applications.
