And trust us, this is indeed a great feature, given the fact that VLC has a very rich settings menu, so forcing users to browse among all these options wouldn’t be such a great idea.

The interface perfectly matches the idea behind this product: it’s a simple look for a very powerful application. Although the interface is nothing special, it’s excellent for those who just want to open multimedia files without wasting their time. Plus, those who’re not satisfied with a simple appearance can always use the skin support and pick something different from the developers’ website.

And if simplicity isn’t exactly the kind of thing that fits you, just enter the settings menu and you might change your mind a little bit. VLC media player has tons of options, not only related to the visual appearance, but also to configure its functionality. Not to mention that it can provide a wide variety of information regarding the currently opened files.

Still not satisfied? That’s okay, that’s why you have plugins. Tens of plugins, ready to extend functionality, are there getting in line for your caprices.

All in all, VLC is the best you can get. It’s freeware, it comes with a configurable interface, excellent functionality, very friendly on computer resources, it opens any format and is extremely easy to use. This is definitely a keeper.

What's new in VLC media player 0.9.2: September 15th, 2008

· This release will need Windows 2000 to work correctly
· The HTTP interface is now only available on the local machine by default. If you want to make it available from other machines, you will have to edit the ".hosts" file.
· On Windows they are in C:Program FilesVideoLANVLChttp.hosts and C:Program FilesVideoLANVLChttpold.hosts
· This version of VLC contains a new interface for Windows. This interface has a fullscreen controller and simplified preferences. This interface lacks the "Streaming Wizard" that used to be present in VLC 0.8.6, but provides basic profiles.
· The marq, mosaic and logo commands in the rc interface changed. They now require a target name as their first argument. Example: vlc --sub-filter "marq@test{marquee=Hello}" -I rc You can then use commands like: @test marq-marquee Goodbye. If you didn't name the object using @test, its name will default to the plugin name (hence 'marq') in this example. These new commands are also available in the telnet interface.
The "rtp" access output module has been removed. Please use the RTP stream output instead, e.g.:
· Old: '#std{access=rtp,mux=ts,dst=239.255.1.2:5004,sap}'
· New: '#rtp{mux=ts,dst=239.255.1.2,port=5004,sap}'
· You now need to append --m3u-extvlcopt to your command line to enable
